Volunteer Stories

Hannah Billett, volunteered through Cairdeas at Makerere Palliative Care Unit, Kampala, Uganda

“The MPCU is made up of a team of fantastic, forward thinking healthcare professionals who work incredibly hard to provide palliative care services to patients and families in Uganda. They fulfill a number of roles from the day to day clinical service provision to teaching, training and research. I was lucky enough to be part of this team for 4 months at the in end of 2015.

One of the most impressive parts of the MPCU is that they have been able to created a sustainable palliative care service in a resource limited setting.”

Beci Evans, volunteered through Cairdeas at Makerere Palliative Care Unit, Kampala, Uganda

“We spend a lot of time looking not just at the physical symptoms but the social, psychological and spiritual issues too. This can vary from worrying about paying for investigations or school fees while they are not working to being angry at God for what has happened to them…

“the people are some of the friendliest I’ve met - in general, everyone is so welcoming and helpful...

“I am very grateful for the opportunity to volunteer and develop my skills, it has been a true blessing and I’m very thankful for the support from Cairdeas."
