Open Seminar at Edinburgh University

Cairdeas
19th September 2019

Two of our Ugandan colleagues are in the UK this month and are taking part in a one-off seminar at Edinburgh University. The seminar will look at multimorbidity and health in humanitarian settings, hearing about first-hand experiences delivering palliative care services in refugee settings.

Ms Vicky Opia is a nurse specialist in palliative care at Adjumani District Hospital and the focal person for palliative care in the Uganda Ministry of Health in Adjumani District. Dr Peace Bagasha is a Consultant in renal medicine and palliative care at Mulago Hospital in Kampala. Peace is also completing a PhD as part of the THRIVE programme with Cambridge and Makere Universities.

Vicky and Peace will also be joined by Dr Mhoira Leng, Cairdeas Medical Director; Prof Julia Downing, Chief Executive of the International Children’s Palliative Care network; and Prof Liz Grant, Director of the Global Health Academy and Assistant Principal for Global Health at the Univeristy of Edinburgh.

Join us to widen this community of practice, engage in discussion, meet key colleagues from Uganda and explore transformational development.

The seminar will take place at the Sydney Lecture Theatre in Edinburgh University, 1 - 3pm on the 3rd October.

Have any questions? Get in touch with us at operations@cairdeas.org.uk or email Liz Grant at liz.grant@ed.ac.uk.

Cairdeas Purple parties are back!

Ian Robinson
28th May 2019

At Cairdeas, we are striving to see a world where palliative care is accessible by all. We can't do this without the support of our wonderful Cairdeas community. This June, we invite you to help us raise funds and awareness for the work we're doing around the world.

Would you consider doing one of the following?

  • Speaking to a group of people you know about the work of Cairdeas
  • Power up for palliative care by challenging yourself to a run, walk or swim
  • A sponsored silence
  • Holding a cake sale
  • Gathering a group of friends to put on a concert
  • Hosting a meal with the opportunity to ask 'end of life' questions
  • Having a de-clutter and selling on unwanted goods

Your own original ideas are welcome!

We have plenty of help available for any activity you decide to take. This could include...

  • Resource pack containing leaflets, slides and photos, a video and Cairdeas angels to sell
  • Contact with someone who can help you prepare a talk (or even deliver it for you!)
  • Purple wristbands/ T shirts (for those powering up)
  • Support from our Operations Director, Sarah

Share what you’re doing – share a photo and caption on social media, or email Sarah (below).

These are some ideas but there’s so much more you could do! Get in touch with our Operations Director Sarah for more inspiration or to talk your idea through. You can find Sarah at operations@cairdeas.org.uk or on 07540741125.
